Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers bring essential services to the Ventura County Rescue Mission. Each year, thousands of people offer their time, talent, and goodness of heart to outreach projects, to help make a difference in the lives of the hurting and the homeless.

Opportunities are on-going, year-round and constantly changing. At the Ventura County Rescue Mission, there is a place for everyone with time to give.

Kitchen Volunteers
Preparing Meals - We need kitchen volunteers to assist with cleaning and cutting fruits and vegetables, preparing meals in advance, and making sack lunches.

Serving Meals We need volunteers (no age restriction) to help serve on our serving line, man the salad bar during the evening meals, set dining room tables, pour drinks, serve plates, and wait on our lower income families that we serve at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Our kitchen staff prepares between 700- 900 meals daily; and volunteers help assist the kitchen personnel to provide our guests with a hot meal and cold drink.

Cleaning Up - There is dining room and kitchen clean up involved as well.

Donation Processing
Sorting & Storing - Assist our mission personnel in the handling of donations that we receive from commercial or private entities. Donations include produce, canned food goods, restaurant food donations, clothes, furniture, toys, etc. Volunteer service in this area of our outreach would include the sorting of canned goods, storing of produce, inventory of private donations, and light lifting.

Learning Center
Tutoring - We are in need of volunteers to assist us in our “Basic Life Skills Program” a tutoring class headed up by Judith McHenry a former educator in the Ventura County School District. A minimum of 3 volunteers (preferably with experience in teaching /education) are needed to assist Rescue Mission clients in learning basic reading skills

Special Events
Holiday Meals (mainly our PRE-Thanksgiving banquet held the day before Thanksgiving)

Weekly Deep Cleaning - We need assistance in the "Super Cleaning" done on Saturdays.

Spring Cleaning - We are seeking volunteers to assist us in a deep spring cleaning of all our common areas. The project will consist of cleaning and disinfecting all walls and stairways, reorganizing our drink rooms and storage containers. Disinfecting and cleaning our chapel area including the chairs and walls, window cleaning inside and out. We will have a block party clean up (picking up all trash with in a two block radius of the mission) weeding and beautifying our flower and plant areas.
